Prophet Sallahu ‘alihi wa salam said, “if the day of judgement is established upon one of you and in his hand is a shoot of a plant, let him plant it. (Ahmad & authenticated by Sh albani).

  • This hadith depicts a very picturesque scene in which a person is holding a shoot of a plant and all of a sudden, with great shock, the Day of Judgement is established.
  • To highlight with certainty that the Day of Judgement has begun, the past-tense is used.
  • This is used to imply that no one should think they are an exception to this scenario.
  • This implies that the person is just at the initial stages of the action.
  • A plant is used as an example, since it brings benefit to all — humans, animals and the surroundings.
  • Why not death, earth quake or another calamity? To make it clear that no one will benefit from this plant in any way what so ever.
  • Why should you plant it? What is the benefit of planting it?
  • If you were in this situation what would you do?

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger Sallalahu ‘alihi wa salam as saying:

A prostitute saw a dog moving around a well on a hot day and hanging out its tongue because of thirst. She drew water for it in her shoe and she was pardoned [because of this act] (Muslim).
  • One of the great lessons we learn from this hadith is never think you are better than anyone. No matter what deeds you have done, you never know what deed someone may have done that is more beloved to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’la than all of your deeds; and you may have done a single deed, so hated by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’la that He seizes you for it and catapults you in the hellfire.

al-Sha’bi said, “be truthful especially when you think it will harm you, for it will benefit you. And avoid lying when you think it will benefit you, for it will harm you.”

Debase and Raise

It will debase and raise (56:3)

  • Hazem ibn Dinaar said I saw a man stand for prayer at night and he began reciting Surah al-waqi’ah (the event) and he kept repeating the above ayah until the morning. I followed him and I said to him what is the debasing and the raising? He replied, “Verily in the hereafter people will be lowered never to be raised ever again; and people will be raised never to be lowered again.” That man was ‘Umar ibn Abdul ‘Aziz.

al-Hasan al-Basri rahimahuAllah said, “you will never attain that which you love except by leaving that which you desire; and you will never attain that which you hope for except by being patient over that which you hate.”

Umar ibn Abdul ‘Aziz was asked, “who was upon the truth? Ali or Mu’awiyah?” He responded, “that was a trial Allah protected our swords from. Let us then protect our tongues regarding it.”

Abu Huraira RadiAllahu anh said, whoever is blessed to make duaa won’t be deprived of the response for Allah Subhanhu wa ta’la says, “Call me and I will respond to you.”
