Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (3:31).

  • as-Sa’di rahimahuAllah said, “this ayah mentions the obligation of loving Allah, its sign, affect and benefit.”
  • The sign of loving Allah is following Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam.
  • The focus of many Muslims has become only on loving Prophet SAW. Allah SWT did not tell us in this ayah to love him. Claiming to love Prophet SAW is very easy. True love is expressed by ones eagerness to follow his sunnah and by not inventing ways of expressing that love.
  • Other benefit: Love of Allah is not immediately attained. Rather it has steps and stages, the first of which is following Prophet SAW.
  • The affect of loving Allah is that Allah will love you.
  • The benefit derived is that ones sins will be forgiven.

Ibn al-Qayyim RahimahuAllah said, “do not look for your worth in the eyes of people; look for it within your self. If your conscious is at peace then you will ascend high, and if you truly know yourself then what is said about you will not harm you.”

Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahuAllah said, “Do not worry about the affairs of this world for they are for Allah. And do not worry about your provision for it is from Allah. And do not worry about the future for it is in the Hands of Allah. Have one and only one worry: How to please Allah. For if you please Allah, you will be pleased and it will suffice you and enrich you.”

Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, “Trade is [just] like interest.” But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah . But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] – those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein (2:276).

  • This is the first ayah in the Quran regarding the prohibition of interest.
  • The expected here is those who take interest. Instead Allah SWT said those who eat interest. The imagery highlighted here is the end of the one who consumes and for what usury is  consumed is the same as food.

And from part of the night, pray with it as additional worship for you. It is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station (17:79)

  • Allah SWT said part of the the night and not the entire night. It shows that Allah SWT wants us to worship Him when we are energetic and focused.
  • Allah SWT did not say fasalli but rather fatahajjuh — both mean prayer. The later implies that you slept and then prayed.
  • What does this pronoun return to? It refers to the Quran as mentioned in the previous ayah (if it was biha it would refer to the night).
  • Means voluntary and not compulsory.
  • Implies that the only person who benefit is you.
  • The highest station that anyone can ever have is al-Maqam al-Mahmood (which is reserved for Prophet SAW). If you can have the best of the next world through the night prayer, surely anything insignificant of this world can be achieved through it.
  • Abu Ishaaq al-Sabiie RahimahuAllah said, “O the assembly of youth, exert yourself with all your energy and capitalize on your youth prior to being incapacitated [and unable to pray the night prayer].”

Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahuAllah mentions that Allah has made a struggle between two states of reliefs– one before and one after. A trail between two free states, and hardship between two eases. So there is no trail which is permanent. And there is no hardship which is permanent… And perhaps a slave looks at something and says it is a punishment but hidden in it is a blessing.

al-Hasan al-Basir said, “When prayer is the least of your concerns, then what is your most important concern? As much as you fix your prayer, your life will be fixed. Did you not know that prayer was equated with success: ‘Come to Prayer, Come to Success.’ How can you ask Allah SWT for success when you are not responding to His right upon you?”
