Are you Suffering?

15 Jul

إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَفَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْإِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ

Indeed, We have granted you, al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrificeIndeed, your enemy is the one cut off.

  • Some scholars say that this Surah was revealed because Prophet SAW was sad, due to the death of his son. The Quresh further hurt him SAW by saying “his lineage is cut off.” So to console the Messenger SAW, Allah revealed this Surah.
  • This Surah contains amazing guidance for how to react in times of difficultly, especially vis-a-vis a loss.
  • Allah did not began by ayah 3 but by ayah 1.
  • When  going through calamity, first think of the blessings of Allah, and then compare them with the transient and minuscule loss.
  • Afterwards, pray to Allah (whenever Prophet SAW faced a difficulty, he prayed two rakaaahs and made duaa), as this helps in coping with the hardship.
  • Also, when blessed with a bounty, ones reactions should be to thank Allah by turning to Him in prayer (it is sunnah to do a prostation of thankfulness).
  • Reflect: This surah contains advice on how to deal with personal insults, when engaged in dawah.

Someone emailed and asked the following: What do you mean by Allah swt did not start with 3 but with 1?

Answer: The surah did not begin with ayah number 3 but rather number 1. So there are two deep implications:

In times of calamity one needs to think of all the good, in order to calm oneself down, not to be sad… and then come up with a plan. Usually people think of all the evil and no plan. In this Surah,

Allah tells Prophet SAW your far from abtar, as a manner of fact you have the greatest legacy — alkathwar since he SAW has the greatest number of followers who will meet on the day of jdugement at . Then Allah tells him what he should be doing — the prayer — and the plan that Allah has — your enemy is cutoff. Sequence is important. So first think good, come up with the plan… don’t worry about negative.

From a dawah perspective, people will say a lot of things, and throw personal insults, but we need to remember that our reward is with Allah (from اعطا). Then we need to continue engagin in our worship — prayer. As for what the people are saying about Allah and His religion, don’t worry Allah will deal with them. Insh’Allah this will be covered in another post.
