وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
Woe to every slanderer and backbiter.
- Ibn Abbas RA said: Humaz is the one who slanders and Lumuz is the fault-finding individual.
- Humaza is from the same root as Mihmaz — a wooden stick containing a metal part at the end; this part can be used to poke somoene. The effect of the Hamaz: the party wronged feels that they have been poked with a sharp object.
- Qiyam is standing; qiyamah (with the ta) is the especially long day of standing. The habit of the people cursed is that they constantly engage in the aforementioned.
