Who deserves Wayl?

وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ

Woe to every slanderer and backbiter.

  • Ibn Abbas RA said: Humaz is the one who slanders and Lumuz is the fault-finding individual.
  • Humaza is from the same root as Mihmaz a wooden stick containing a metal part at the end; this part can be used to poke somoene. The effect of the Hamaz: the party wronged feels that they have been poked with a sharp object.
  • Qiyam is standing; qiyamah (with the ta) is the especially long day of standing. The habit of the people cursed is that they constantly engage in the aforementioned.

Walikukm As-Salam Wa Rahmatollahi Wa Barakathu,

They are from many tafseer lectures — a lot from Nouman Ali Khan’s — others from books of tafseers and some from grammatical studies. I don’t provide many references since this blog is not an academic blog (Insh’Allah in the future I will start that). The point of the blog is to give a simple, yet profound, ereminder to Muslims in different ways, increasing their appreciation and love for the Qur’an and the sunnah.
