Prophet SAW was eating with six companions when a Bedouin came and ate the food in two mouthfuls. Prophet SAW said, “Had he said BismiAllah [with the name of Allah] it would have sufficed for all of you.” [At-Tirmidhi]
- BismiAllah is recited for Barakh— an increase in utility or usefulness of something. This recitation prevents Shytaan from partaking of the food.
- If you forget immediately recite: Bismillaahi fee awwalihi wa aakhirihi (With the name of Allah, in the beginning and in the end). This forces Shytaan to vomit. [Abu Dawood & An-Nasai]
- Upon finishing, recite the first duaa. Prophet SAW said whoever recites it, Allah will forgive all his past [minor] sins. Reflect over the mercy of Allah. [At-Tirmidhi]
- Sometimes even after eating a sizeable meal we are not satisfied. The Sahaba similarly informed Prophet SAW. He replied: Perhaps you eat separately. The companions answered in the affirmative. [Abu Dawood]
