Did the news come to you?

6 Nov

Once Prophet SAW was walking and he stopped to listen to a woman reciting:

هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ

Has the news of the overcovering event come to you (O Muhammad)? [88:1]

  • There are two synonyms in Arabic for arriving: ataa (أتا) and jaa (جاء).
  • Atta is used for light and easier events. Jaa has the added connotation of magnitude — something which is heavy and big.
  • Why is atta used here? When we hear the news of the Day of Judgement we take it lightly and are not affected. For the actual Day of Judgement, Allah uses Jaa. When it arrives, it is going to be very heavy (a day that will make a child white-haired).
  • When Prophet SAW heard the ayah, he said Jaaani; meaning it has come to me and it was very heavy upon me.

Umar RA on his deathbed said, “if I had what is between the east and the west, I would ransom that to save myself from the coming ordeal”.
