A tragedy of our times is that we have memorized duas yet do not know their meaning; we recite them yet fail to reflect. For example, consider the duaas for sleeping and waking:
With your name, O Allah, I die and I live.[Mus]
All praise is for Allah, Who gave us life after He caused us to die and to Him is the return. [B&M]
And it is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day. Then He revives you therein that a specified term may be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then He will inform you about what you used to do. [6:60]
- If Allah causes us to sleep every night and gives us life the next day, will He not make us die one day and give us eternal lives?
